5 Leogane, Haiti Jan 12 2010
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti near town of Leogane. It caused major damage in Port au Prince,Jacmel and other settlements near the regions. Notable building in the city were destroyed. Death toll reached 316000, and about 85,000 of unpublished deaths and number of displaced persons at 895,000.
4 Rudbar, Iran June 21 1990
The quake of 7.4 caused damage within 100 kilometers of the epicenter’s radius near the city of Rashi, and about 200 kilometer northwest of Tehran. It destroyed more than 700 villages across cities of Rudbar, Manjiil and Luhsan. The earthquake cause 40,000 fatalites, 60,000 injured and 500,000 homeless and loss of $200,000,000.
3 Izmit, Turkey August 17 1990
The 7.9 magnitude quake struck northernn Turkey for about 3.7 seconds. The death tolled 17,127 and injured about 50,000. Izmit was badly damaged and left no home untouched. 120,000 poorly engineered houses were damaged and 50,000 heavily damaged , 2000 buildings were collapsed and made 300,000 people homeless.
2 Maule, Chile February 27 2010
A magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, with intense shaking lasting for about three minutes and it ranked as the sixth largest earthquake ever to be recorded by a seismograph. The earthquake triggered a tsunami which devastated several coastal towns in south-central Chile and damaged the port at Talcahuano. Tsunami warnings were issued in 53 countries, and the wave caused minor damage in the San Diego area of California. The earthquake also generated a blackout that affected 93 percent of the Chilean population and which went on for several days in some locations. 370,000 homes were damaged and death was of 525 as announced by authorites in Jan 2011 and 25 were missing.
1 Nepal Earthquake 25 April 2015
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in Barpak Gorkha district west of Kathmandu,with equivalent power of 20 thermonuclear weapons. The devastation claimed the lives of at least 9,000. The devastating quake also destroyed major monuments such as the Dharahara, temples and world heritage sites near Kathmandu.
